I consulted with my HIV Medical Specialist Dr Mattana Hanvanich at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand and we discussed about Glutathione and HIV.
It is a powerful antioxidant that protects your body from damage caused by free radicals. These are charged oxygen particles that attack healthy body cells. Low glutathione levels are strongly implicated in the wasting and negative nitrogen balance due to increased oxidative stress seen in full blown AIDS.
So why not take Glutathione supplements if you're HIV+?
Glutathione is NOT absorbed through the Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT). It is made by the human body from the amino acids L-cysteine, L-glutamic acid, and glycine. The only practical way to increase the amount of Glutathione is to eating foods that are rich in these amino acid "building blocks" of Glutathione. Vegetables such as avocados, asparagus, cauliflower, raw spinach, okra and broccoli. Also, tomatoes, squash and potatoes contain high amounts of sulfur, a component of Glutathione. Oranges and limes, are fruits that are also rich its building blocks. Brazil nuts and wall nuts are also good sources as are raw eggs. At least a few of these should form part of a healthy diet anyway so there is absolutely no need to waste your money on inabsorbable Glutathione supplements.
I hope this helps save some HIV+ people time and money. Any lifestyle change you undertake in , including changes in diet and the use of supplements, must always be done in close concert with your HIV Medical Specialist.
