Is the HIV screening free in San Lazaro Hospital in Manila? How is the process? Please help.

POZZIEPINOY’S RESPONSE

Hi there.

Thank you for your email.

In all government hospitals, HIV test is not free but with a minimal fee. I asked around and I got two responses:

From Dr. Phillip Tjr:

"I think its not free because San Lazaro is not one of the social hygiene clinics and is considered the reference laboratory. Their HIV screening test may be most likely directed among in patients who may also be suspect for HIV. The fee may be very minimal but still the patient still have to shell out some amount just like most of the public hospitals. The HIV test is however free in most social hygiene clinics."

From Mr. Chris Lagman:

"Not sure about SLH but right across it, at the Manila Social Hygiene Clinic, HIV testing is offered free-of-charge."

For the process of the HIV Test, it is the same for every testing site in the Philippines in accordance with Republic Act 8504. After filling out the form, there is a pre-counselling prior to drawing of blood and a post counselling after the result has been delivered. If the person is underage, he needs a parental consent or should be accompanied by an adult prior to the HIV test.

I hope I was able to answer your concerns. Feel free to email me again if you have other questions.

Stay healthy,
