Overseas Employment and ARV

Hi pozzy,

How are you? Ive seen from one of your posts on the internet regarding a guy who is wanting to go overseas and he is not interested because first place he will be rejected especially if middle east. You wrote down that you sent some arv medicines on some patients who is hiv+ abroad? Is it true that you really send those meds abroad... I hope youll be the answer on my problem.

POZZIEPINOY’S RESPONSE

Hi XXX,

Thank you for your email.

There are two points in your email.

1. With regards to overseas employment:
    a. Middle east, other muslim countries and Singapore don't issue working permits for
        people with HIV
    b. If you pass the initial test, meaning you are cleared for HIV and you acquire the virus
there, once it is detected during your next annual check up which is required for
        employment, you may get deported.
    c. As required by foreign employers, HIV test is required to undergo HIV
testing while still here in the Philippines. This can be by passed if you apply for direct
employment if you are in the country where you wish to work for
    d. Most foreign companies still allow employment even if the applicant has HIV. Best
is to know the company policy first before applying.
2. With regards to sending ARV's abroad:
    a. Coordinate this with your treatment hub. It is still case to case basis as this entails
        proper arrangements
    b. Points to consider:
        i. If country's customs where you wish to work for would allow it
ii. Who would shoulder the courier expenses
iii. As required by hubs here, you may need to come back every 6 months or every year
           to get consultation.

Now if you are working for a long period of time in another country where it is safe to disclose your HIV status, you might as well have your treatment covered by the health insurance. This will be less burdensome on your part.

I hope I was able to answer your concerns. Once again thank you for your email.

Stay healthy,
Pozziepinoy
