Job in a Call Center?

POZZIEPINOY’S RESPONSE

Hi sir,

Thank you for your email.

Like what I mentioned before, anyone can work here in the Philippines even if he or she has HIV. This could be any job, not only in call centers. The reason for this is that we have an HIV law to protect applicants and employees. HIV test is not required for pre-employment, thus one with HIV doesn't have to be known to have it. It is the prerogative of the applicant to disclose his or her own status.

One point that is always raised by people working in call centers is the shifting of schedules as most of the jobs offered require this. This may somehow be stressful to people living with HIV (PLHIV) especially those who are already taking antiretroviral medicines as frequent adjustment of work schedules would mean frequent adjustment of schedule of the ARV.

However, those who are empowered, may just tell his supervisor or manager about his or her HIV status. In the DOLE guidelines, a PLHIV may request a fixed schedule to not compromise his health. Of course, some are scared to disclose their HIV status, but if you really want to work in a company with shifting schedules or with schedules always being adjusted, you may as well consider disclosure as you will be protected by the DOLE guideline.

Stress management techniques should also be practiced. Not only is the schedule stressful, but the work environment itself can be, like in most multinational companies. However, the good pay in most call centers provide peace of mind. What is important is you like what you are doing and this makes work enjoyable and less stressful.

Having HIV is not an obstacle anymore to having a good job. Live your life and your dreams even you are a person living with HIV.
