Seeking Help

Magandang Umaga,

Ako po ay humihingi ng tulong para sa aking kaibigan na may possibility of being infected with HIV. He told me he made a mistake by having unprotected sex with a massage therapist (Dec 26, 2015) while he was influenced by alcohol. He's scared and regrets making that terrible decision, but he wants to know and get treated if he is positive because he wants to protect and live a long life with his girlfriend.

Please help him.

POZZIEPINOY’S RESPONSE

Hi XXX.

Good morning and Happy New Year.

Thank you for your email. Thank you for reaching out to us to ask for help for your friend.

Having unprotected sex (not using condoms during penetrative sex) increases the risk of HIV transmission. In the Philippines where 22-24 new HIV cases arise every day, there is a great likelihood to get infected from just anyone. The risk is compounded by alcohol or drug use as these can cloud the judgement of anyone having sex. Even the smartest people, under the influence of alcohol and drugs will forget all the things that he learned or had been warned about. Regret follows after having done it when the person becomes sober or the effect of drugs had vanished. Only then will someone realize the grave mistake one had done like what happened to your friend. That is the reason why during our HIV Education and Awareness Talk (HEAT), we specifically mention not to use drugs or drink alcohol prior to having sex. We address this specially to the student in school who are reckless and exploratory when it comes to drug use, alcohol intake and sex.

For your friend, the first thing to do now is to get tested in any of the HIV testing centers that is listed in this website. Tell your friend to not be scared as the has four easy processes: 1. filling up the form, 2. pre-counselling, 3. extraction, 4. Release of the result and post counselling if needed. The test is confidential as specifically indicated in the HIV law.

I know it is scary but it is more scary not knowing if one is HIV positive or not because of the fear of getting tested. It is more scary if one has a relationship with a partner and knowing that their unprotected sex can easily transmit the virus.

The time to act is now. The HIV antibodies can be formed and be detected early with the modern HIV testing equipments and technology. That is the first step. Treatment comes when the person gets tested positive and the counselor will direct your friend to the nearest HIV treatment hub.

I do hope that everything turns out fine. But no matter what, negative or positive, trust me life goes on. That is the reality. That is a fact.

I hope that I was able to answer your question. Feel free to email us again if you have other concerns.
