We have assisted these two years ago. It seems like the parents of the child didn't pay attention until the condition is already worse, or because of inadherence to antiretroviral medicines which could have saved the child's life if taken religiously. The other one is an adult and our Care Manager just found out recently that he was confined in San Lazaro Hospital because of meningitis.
How did this happen? or should I say, why are these things still happening. We have all the hubs in Metro Manila and they are very accessible. The hubs doctors in the government facilities are free of charge. There is an indigence program for PLHIV in PhilHealth, DSWD and LGU's. The antiretrovirals are free. Most of the lab works if done frequently are free.
This is sad. In my recent post, I was already venting out my inner feelings about these things. I am in this advocacy for seven years now and the same problems still exist. Where is the focus? Where is the attention? What is worse is that the Philippine government has resources. Global Fund is investing millions of dollars. Where is the money going? Who will address all these issues? Up to now, less than half of those diagnosed with HIV are on ARV's. Where are all of them? Who is trying to locate all the lost to follow up clients?
Two died in Metro Manila because of AIDS when the rest of the world, there should be nobody dying anymore of AIDS related infections. We have the technology, we have the facilities, especially in Metro Manila.
In 2011, I stood up to act. Now, its 2017, I am calling everyone to pay attention. People are dying. Stop spending money to months and months of meetings, to projects, to "events", to organizations that are just making slow progress. Let us once again pay attention to help save lives.
