PEP is a way way to stop the transmission and is done within 72 hours post exposure. Doctors give a lower dose of the antiretrovirals to combat it and the client will be observed for side effects days and weeks. This is a tedious process as the client needs to undergo a series of tests, including the viral load test to ensure that the treatment is successful. This is costly as the VL is expensive plus the frequent visitation to the hospital. In the other countries, this is covered by insurance but in the Philippines, there is no mechanism for this as the antiretrovirals are really meant only for the management of for people living with HIV. This is somewhat unfortunate, but we have to understand that the antiretrovirals are expensive thus the Department of Health really restricts the use of it for only PLHIV.
Best option now is to know if the sex partner's viral load is undetectable since it is a fact now that an undetectable viral load means HIV is untransmissible (U=U).
