HIV Screening Chronicles: A 20 Year Old from South Mindanao

Yesterday, Project Red Ribbon received a text message from a 20 year old, who got screened by one of our partners in South Mindanao. He said our number was given to him by the nurse who screened him in the clinic. He contacted us because his HIV Screening turned out to be positive.

Mark, (not his real name), said that he is not sexually active but had condomless sex before. However, he told us that he has been experiencing rashes, vomiting and frequent diarrhea already. Those symptoms may or may not be related to HIV but since he has not experienced those before, he took the courage to get screened. He told us that he somehow suspected the result but he had to do it. He asked questions if he will live for a long time, if we will be able to continue his work and won't get fired, if we will have children. One by one, we addressed his concerns, and finally told him to go to the treatment hub. We contacted the head nurse of the hub near him and asked him to assist Mark.

Later on, we made a follow up and he was already being managed by the hub.

Mark story is one of the many stories that we receive in the hotline numbers or from our partners conducting the HIV Screening. We are so glad that right now, Project Red Ribbon is the most aggressive organization conducting HIV Screening in the entire country, and by doing so, we are able to help save live.

One Time Big Time

Today Project Red Ribbon assisted a client who emailed about his concerns. A week before he came to the office, he said that he took the test and the clinic called the following day but he wasn't able to pick up. He tried calling them again but with no response.

Client HIV Screening

He got worried. Well, he has been worrying since he already has rashes and some bruises which are going up his trunk from his legs. He had a consultation with a doctor previously and the doctor's first impression was lupus erythematosus. He took some series of lab tests and the doctor dismissed the impression and prescribed the HIV test.

Today, we met him and took him to the office for the HIV screening. Simone, our counselor talked to his about HIV and the treatment.  The result turned out to be reactive.

We told the client some option. oil where to go now. We gave him choices as top where to go. Since he has HMO and PhilHealth, we referred him to our newest partner, the Clinic 1276 of St. Lukes Global City. We linked him to care fast by calling the nurse of the new hub to assist him. They have been coordinating when we left.

Client was given condoms

During the course of counseling he told us that he was always wearing condoms when having sex. He said that there was only one instance when a condom sex happened when he got drunk, and when he woke up it was already too late. He also mentioned that he suspected that the guy was HIV positive as he changes from his body and after their condoles sex, he just disappeared.

It really can happen. One can get HIV from a one time big time condomless sex. Like what we always tell people, do not mix alcohol with sex as there is a tendency of not using condom when there's a sexual activity. In the clients case, he didn't know that something was happening but he still woke up but never pushed away the guy, which meant that despite of this, he still allowed it, since he was drunk.

It really its an unsafe country now. We really don not know who has HIV and who hasn't. We just need to continuously do our part in educating and distributing condoms. We still have to do our best to help people and save lives.

What's Your Impact?

The cases of HIV  in the Philippines is still on the rise. With this in mind, what is your impact? How can you, your organization or your agency contribute impactful activities to combat the epidemic.

For years now, with the involvement of the Foundation in the National HIV Program, a few organizations still create activities with no impact. Some just count heads or participants during HIV talks, some train people with no direction or programs for sustainability, some create programs that are literally just a waste of money.

The cases of HIV in the Philippines is on the rise. People are dying here and yet, organizations and agencies don't have a fast approach to arresting the epidemic. The halting of programs due to issues and obstacles should not deter organizations and agencies in creating new and innovative activities that will create impact and arrest the epidemic. Programs that are being done by organizations and agencies that create less and slow impact should be evaluated or even shelved.

There are programs all over the world that work. Why can't we adopt them in the country? Why can't we all think outside the box and look at the fast outcome and not just count head and waste money?

The time of action is now. But if we always think, like it's business as usual, then nothing will; happen to any of our programs.
