Oral Sex and HIV Test

Hello! 

Let me share you my concern because i want to enlighten my mind and be re-assured that i am just overthinking.

Last 3 months, i had an intercourse with a guy, he gave me an oral sex and i gave him too; no anal sex was done between the both of us. I had an HIV Screening for the first 4 weeks and it came out NONREACTIVE. I know myself that the window period for a person is 3 months, unless a person is 1. Immunosupressed 2. Cancer having chemotherapy and 3. Taking medications for Hepatitis C because they can delay a person from making anitbodies to HIV. But i am not one of those 1/2/3 mentioned. 

After 3 months, specifically 86 days from my last intercourse with that guy. I donated blood because its my routine every year to do this. I turned to be HIV NONREACTIVE, the assay was EIA/ELISA. I know its a very sensitive test because a machine was processing it and ELISA is the gold standard for antibody screening for infectious diseases. 

I just want to ask if i should start to unload all these overthinking now? Thank you dear!!

First of all, thank you for your question. Thank you for reading the blog. 

I want to say, I am proud of you for having the courage to take the HIV test. It is one of the greatest decisions you have made in your life. I hope that others reading this blog post will be inspired by your courage in knowing your HIV status, because now you are empowered and will know what to do next time you have sexual encounters again.

It is true that 3 months is the window period still being followed by HIV testing facilities to have accurate results as our HIV testing kits are very sensitive now. So if an HIV test was done with your donated blood, 1. with your permission, and 2, after 3 months of your last condom-less sex with a guy, then you don’t have to worry after all. Also, the risk is very miniscule if only oral sex with no anal sex had happened between the two of you.

Stop thinking anymore. However, with the HIV epidemic, you should learn from your experience. Learn what you have learned from your pre- and post- counselling.. Always be consistent in using the condom. Make sure that it is readily available when you are engaging in sex. If you don’t know the HIV status of your partner, do not have condom-less sex. Period. If you are sexually active, make the HIV test a part of your annual physical test.
