Email 413: Had Unprotected Sex Before

I never had an HIV test ever since I had sex with men. I am 23 years old now and started sex 3 years ago. I was fucked with 2 persons (without condom), and with two individuals, one with condom and the other has not. These were all happened by intervals of months to have sex again, and it was 3 years ago.  

But then I never liked to be in bottom so I had tried to have sex with different guys where I’m on top, mostly I never use condom, and sometimes I just get an oral sex. Most probably, 2 years I’m on top until now. I really got worried about my condition and health now. So far in that course, I never had gone into really flu or illnesses whatsoever that has to do with HIV symptoms, not in particular situation that I can remember. I have fairly rashes but I guess I got it when I had couple drinks during the night and it appears after a day/s or an hours. As I remember, I really get flu once in a year, but not really after sex  
within week or weeks. Maybe I am really scared to be tested. I don’t know what to do when it resulted to positive. I know these all can’t really be my bases, but I want to know my status. What World AIDS Means to Me

At first World Aids Day for me is just an ordinary day. I never thought that in one particular time it will mean a lot for me. In the past 2 years I have experienced a few ups and downs and I know that it is still a long way to go unlike those predecessors that I have. I haven’t even experienced half of what they had in their lives. There are still moments that I ask myself will I be able to do it? Will I be able to keep my strength going? Until when can I endure the pain of seeing people like me getting discriminated and stigmatized because of their status?

I have already met a lot of different people with different backgrounds, beliefs, practices, ideals and goals. There are only a few of us who continue on fighting for what we believe is right. Trying all that we can to make a difference. It is a difficult road however if we hold hands together we will be able to make it even in the toughest road that we will face.

Just want to share my story . When I'm at 22 Ive encountered sex with a girl without knowing who she really is and it happened once. After a week i had a discharged so i went to a clinic then do the std testing and found out i had a gonorrhea. I was so anxious
because what if she had also HIV, i researched what are the symptoms of HIV the time passed by most of symptoms i suffered like flu, diarrhea, back pain, swollen lymph nodes and fatigue.

Email 412: On Oral Sex and HIV

Hi Pozziepinoy,

Before anything else, I want to say that you are really an amazing person continuing to live on. I hope I do get your fighting spirit. Anyway. Tanong ko lang, gaano kalaki yung risk...may naka oral sex ako nung dec 1 and nalasahan ko yung lumabas. I checked my mouth after and thankfully wala naman akong ulcers or sugat. I gargled povidone iodine (not brushed my mouth) pagkatapos ng encounter na yun since baka magkasugat ako if magbrubrush agad. I know there is always a risk involved and I already know the 3 month window period. Napaparanoid nanaman ako kaiisip. please help me. I was diagnosed with depression and pinapalala pa ng pagiging paranoid and hypochondriac ( isip ng isip na may sakit) ko. I know mali yung ginawa ko at sobrang nagsisi ako.

Email 411: Alcohol and ARV's

good day to you sir. Since Christmas is around the corner and a lot of party will be held. I Would like to ask is alcohol intake is a no no to us taking ARVs and cotri.  thnks once again.

Thank you for your email.

There are times that alcohol can magnify the side effects of your ARV's. For instance, from my experience, taking any alcoholic beverage prior to taking my efavirenz can make me itch and make my skin dry resulting to itching.

If you are just new to taking your ARV's, try to not drink any alcoholic beverage without the permission of your HIV doctor. Later on, when your body has adjusted to them, you can drink in moderation once again.

Email 410: Free CD4 Test in RITM-ARG?

hi,

im here to ask something, last april 2013, when all my requirements going abroad is ready, suddenly my HIV test became reactive..
the test was from san lazaro hospital (DOH) . im planning to have a cd4 test at ritm alabang, with my results in the said hospital, am i valuable to have a free cd4 test?

Hi there.

Thank you for your email.

With your confirmatory test result, you can be enrolled in any hub. If you want free lab tests including the CD4 test, you need to enrol in RITM and subject yourself with the different tests there. If you are enrolled in other hubs, you won't qualify for the free CD4 test in RITM-ARG.

I came out as a gay man in the 1980s when the world was just trying to understand what later became known as HIV/AIDS.  No one knew what the strange illness that was affecting mostly gay men.  Before it was known as HIV/or AIDS, it used to be referred to as GRID or Gay Related Infectious Disease. Soon, we suffered a great deal of loss of lives in our community. Because it was happening mostly to gay men, many thought that it was a punishment from God, and so many people referred to HIV/AIDS as WOG or Wrath of God (Isn’t that terrible?) The early years of the epidemic were marked by despair, fear and a sense of helplessness. We soon realized that no one would take care of us except us(!) So we galvanized, we organized, we protested and we fought like crazy to get attention and better access to treatment.  Support and community brought us hope and made us fight our own sense of hopelessness. With the advent of new medications thirteen years later after the first diagnosis of HIV/AIDS,, there was MORE hope. People did not automatically die of AIDS-related complications. People were living longer. (I know of people- CLOSE FRIENDS!!!- who are living well with HIV or AIDS for the last thirty years!) And with further advances in medicine, HIV/AIDS became a chronic yet manageable illness. People can live with HIV or AIDS and at the same time pursue the life they want to live. But medications only work hand in hand with a lively sense of hope- hope that people can live longer with the help of treatment and emotional and spiritual support. HIV or AIDS is not a death sentence. You’ve got to believe in treatment. Without hope, however, people lose their reason to live and some stop caring for their health and well-being.  You have to fight hopelessness and despair in order to live.
