Email 724: Feeling the Side Effects of Efavirenz

Hi. Thank you for all the encouragement and the information that your blog provides, and it has been a great help in my journey since last September when I was confirmed to be HIV+.

I recently had my change of ARV since Nevirapine gave me the expected fever and rashes. Just yesterday I started taking Efavirenz as a new measure.

I took the Efav last night by 10PM and tried to sleep and I noticed that when I was roused from slumber at about 1AM I was really dizzy like I was high on something and I was kept in this state even after I woke up at 8AM to take my Lami/Zido this morning. What's weird is that as I am writing to you now at about 3PM I am still a bit tipsy and rather "floating" or aloof in thoughts...

Is this normal for the first take of Efav? Is there any measure to lessen this experience?

Thank you very much and God keep you.

Email 666: Questions!

Dear Pozzie,

First of all, would like to congratulate you for the strength and advocacy helping people like us.

Recently i was diagnosed of HIV, my CDC4 is 155 and viral load of 228,000+ luckily i have no symptoms, no lesions, no rashes, my CBC is perfect, xray is clear, no other STDs. Im now on ARV lamivi/zidovu 2x a day and efavirenz at night time. The efavirenz is the most i have side effects, at first, vivid dreams, nightmares, trouble sleeping, i wake up every 2 hours but it seems to improve as the days go by. I just have a heart condition, well it is a case of resolved cardiomyopathy ( heart enlargement) but i developed a case of episodal AF atrial fibrialltion ( heart pounding with irregular rhythm and rate).

Email 158: On Skin Rashes

Good day.

I have been diagnosed with HIV for a month now overseas and now I'm currently having my vacation here in Manila. My doctor gave me this ARV tablet (Atripla) but after three weeks of taking this medicine I noticed some rashes on my arms, chest and my stomach. They are like a blotches maybe. I am not sure. They are also very itchy and are getting worse.

Email 113: Can I Switch ARV's?

Hi Pozziepinoy.

Just a little background about me, my name is XXX and I live in CDO. I have been diagnosed with HIV last September after voluntarily taking a test. Knowing that I have HIV was a shock and I’m still dealing with it out now. My family already knows. Before taking the test, there is this guy that I have been dating.  He has accepted my current situation and we’re now in a magnetic relationship.

Email 95: Switching Back to Nevirapine?

Hello.

I used to take Nevirapine and Lamiduvine/Stavudine but had rashes and fever. So, I stopped taking it.

Now, my doctor gave me Efavirenz and Lamiduvine/Stavudine and had rashes and dizziness while taking it but I still continued until the side effects are now minimal.
