Sir gusto ko lang po sana itanong. Kailangan po ba magkaroon ka ng kahit isa sa symptoms sa loob ng window period bago mo masabi na maaaring positive ka sa hiv? Salamat po.

Sir, I would like to ask something. Does it need to have at least one symptom in the window period for your to be positive for HIV? Thank you.

POZZIEPINOY’S RESPONSE

Hi XXX.

Thank you for your email. Thank you for reading the blog.

Like what I always tell my readers here, HIV has non-specific symptoms. This means that there may be symptoms or none at all. The symptoms that may arise also depends on each person. Some have dermatologic symptoms, some have diarrhea and body wasting, some have nodules... each of these depends on the body's reaction to HIV. Also, we have experienced people who have very low CD4 and has no illnesses at all, although they are prone to opportunistic infections. Thus, we can say that the effect of HIV to a person is a case to case basis.

In response to your question, you don't have to be symptomatic to be positive, even in the window period. What we are waiting during this period is the replication of HIV in your body   and the concomitant increase in the HIV antibody production which is the one being detected by the HIV test. Therefore, we are not waiting for the emergence of symptoms, but instead the presence of the HIV antibodies in your blood.

I know it scary and the waiting period is scarier, however it is best to know your status so that you will have control over your health. Just be patient and everything will be ok.
