Selenium and HIV

I have heard about the supplement selenium a long time ago. I heard it can help in reducing HIV in the bloodstream. I remembered that I asked Dr. Ditangco about it and she said that there are no proven facts about this so I just dropped it. But recently I’ve been receiving emails about it and PLHIV’s want me to discuss about it and its effects on HIV. I researched about it.

1. Taking selenium supplement daily can lower the HIV levels and also strengthen the immune system
2. The reason  selenium may help people with HIV live longer is its antioxidant properties
3. It may help reverse damage that the disease does to the immune system
4. However, it does not make it a substitute for ARV’s
5. Increased intake of selenium may increase the risk of skin cancer although have positive effect in lowering mortality rates for people with lung, prostate and colorectal cancer
6. Selenium can’t lower HIV enough though to improve health, so it should be used as an additional part of the normal treatment regimen.
7. Selenium “tames” HIV
8. Selenium can be used for replication of HIV leading to depletion of selenium. So selenium supplementation can be recommended

Selenium is an antioxidant supplement that MAY help in lowering the levels of HIV in the bloodstream, according to researches. However, before taking selenium, make sure to ask your HIV doctor first. We don’t want to complicate our condition now by trying to be “quack doctors” and believing everything that we read.
