Are You A Bystander?

All of you have been reading the blog entries here and because of this, everyday, the blog has been reaching up to three thousand viewers and still increasing. I should be thankful that the blog has become a powerful tool to reach out to a lot of people. However, I don't think this is enough.

FACT's are Alarming!

All those who are regularly reading the blog, you know already the facts about HIV in the Philippines. For the sake of those who just started reading it, let me summarize the HIV state of our nation:

1. This year 2013 alone, there were 719 newly diagnosed HIV seropositive
2. 5-10 new PLHIV's are being referred each day to the HIV/AIDS Treatment hubs. In RITM-ARG alone, on the average, there are 10-15 new PLHIV's being referred for HIV treatment.
3. There were 48 cases diagnosed as AIDS this year,
4. In RITM Satellite Clinic in Malate alone, on the average, there are 3-9 new cases of HIV being detected in their HIV Test.
5. Sexual contact is the predominant mode of transmission
6. On the average, 80-85% of all HIV cases come from the men-having-sex-with-men (MSM) population.
7. Since 1984, there are 12,421 reported cases of HIV in the Philippines.

Are You a Bystander?

Now, we all know the facts. Are we all just going to look at them? Are we all going to be passive about it and just talk about the figures to ourselves and to those who also have the disease in our group? Are we going to be a bystander while others are continually doing things that may assist with the spread of the virus?

Facts are facts. They are real. We can't just look at them. We can't just talk about them to our fellow PLHIV's. They are released to the public so as others will do something about it.

We just can't pass to our government, to the NGO's and advocates the responsibility all the time. We can do it on our own. We can if we want to help.

There are 12,421 PLHIV's in the country. Each has siblings, family members and friends who know that they have it. On top of it, I have almost 3,000 viewers in the blog who know about the facts. Of course there are more out there belonging to the government sector and NGO's who are already empowered. Are we all bystanders? Do we need to conglomerate to make a stand? Don't we all have our own voices?

What Can We Do?

Don't be a bystander! Help now. Inform people and spread the message.

1. Check your phone book. How many contacts do you have? One hundred? Five Hundred? or in the thousands? Do a mass text today. State the facts and start making it viral. If you don't want to appear that it came from you, then at least say that you just received that message and to please pass it to their friends and loved ones.

2. Check you facebook account. I bet you have thousands of friends there. Start posting the facts. You can even share this blog to them. You can start sharing stories of people from other sources. You can if you want to. Whenever there is news about HIV in the Philippines, start posting them.

3. Check your twitter account. You also have thousands of friends there. Post some links about the HIV/AIDs Registry. Start tweeting about the HIV Testing sites. Share HIV posts to educate people about the real score of HIV in the country.

4. Check your email account. Again, you have thousands of friends and acquaintances. Start sharing information about HIV and AIDS in the country.

5. If you are a chatter in the gay social sites, open an HIV account and start posting HIV testing sites and educate about the use of condoms. Talk about the bad mix of sex and alcohol and drugs. Talk about the HIV/AIDS Registry and tell them the facts!

There are 12,421 cases of HIV in the Philippines who have mothers, fathers, siblings, relatives, friends, doctors, nurses etc, and thousands of online acquaintances. I have almost 3,000 readers of this blog. Imagine the power we ALL have right now if we can just give a mass text on our phones, post a message in FB, tweet in twitter, send emails!

So ask yourself! How long are you going to be on the sideline? How long are you going to let things happen right in front of your face? Are still going to tell people that our government and NGO's should do something about the increasing cases when you have the power to change things and make things happen, RIGHT NOW!

Don't be a bystander! ACT NOW!
