Email 303: Cure for HIV?

Hi Pozziepinoy.

 I 've been reading your blog since last year. Reason why I took my 1st test in December. It was non-reactive, though baka window period pa.

Planning to take it again this April.

Regardless of the results, would just like to know if until now, wala pa rin bang gamot for HIV (is there no medicine yet for HIV) or something that can prevent it from becoming an AIDS? Thanks po.

Thank you for your email. Thank you for reading my blog. I hope you are finding all your questions and concerns from the blog posts, the stories and the experiences of others here. I am also proud of you for having the courage to take the test. 

About your concern, let me tell you that there is still no cure for HIV but there are medicines called ARV's which "tame" the HIV and make the virus undetectable and not cause any more havoc to one's immune system. However, this doesn't mean that one is totally cured as the virus is still in the blood stream but very minimal to cause any damage. 

One thing to point out here is that HIV doesn't always lead to AIDS, unless the person with HIV (PLHIV) gets late detection and treatment with his HIV and his level of immune system as detected by the CD4 count drops down to AIDS level. Also, one PLHIV doesn't get an AIDS diagnosis unless his immune system becomes so low that the person becomes vulnerable to opportunistic infections that usually not come out with people with normal immune system. The point that needs to be addressed here is that AIDS can't happen if the person with HIV focuses on early detection of infections and treatment with ARV's, and of curse, maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
