Email 506: Generics for Prophylaxis in Thailand

Hi.

 Can we buy medicines prescribed by a doc in the Philippines in other countries, like Thailand perhaps? Some prophylaxis are just too expensive here. And my doc does not really like the generic ones from  
unknown manufacturers.

Thank you for your email and for reading this blog.

To the best of my knowledge, Thailand does not recognize prescriptions written by medical Doctors from other countries that are not registered as Medical Doctors in Thailand.  The Thai Red Cross Anonymous Clinic located in The Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre is the cheapest place, I am aware of  to go to have your CD4 and Viral Load levels determined and to buy ARVs.  The HIV Medical Specialists there are well regarded worldwide and will be able to prescribe the appropriate prophylactic medicine that is required.  If they deem the generic ones are appropriate, then they will prescribe them.  Please note, as long as they are of pharmaceutical grade, generic drugs are copies of brand-name drugs that have exactly the same dosage, intended use, effects, side effects route of administration, risks, safety, and strength as the original drug.  In other words, their pharmacological effects are exactly the same as those of their brand-name counterparts.  They are just, generally speaking, much cheaper.
