I would like to ask if during the initial HIV medications, one needs to be hospitalised or be absent from work? Or not, since everything is taken orally? Are there extreme cases that an HIV positive gets hospitalized because of the medications?

POZZIEPINOY’S RESPONSE

Hi there.

Thank you for your email.

The initial trial period of HIV medications or ARV's, is the period where in PLHIV's have to observe if there will be the occurrence of side effects of the ARV's. There are mild cases of side effects and there are extreme cases depending on how one's body reacts to the medicines. I have known a few who really have to be hospitalized because of the extreme side effects. Some didn't go to work because of the extensive body rash, high fever, nausea and vomiiing that were experienced. Although some experienced these, others have no reaction at all. So it really is a case-to case basis.

I hope I was able to answer your concerns. Feel free to email me again if you have other questions.

Stay healthy,
