One Person in Every 3 Hours Gets Diagnosed with HIV in the Philippines

While the rest of the world shows a decline in the cases of HIV, the Philippines belongs to a few countries where HIV is still on the rise. My contributor, Malcolm Brown even posed this question: "Is this a reflection that more people in Manila ( since the highest percentage came from Manila alone) don't practice safer sex or that more people are just being tested there?" My answer to him was both.
I told Malcolm, that a month ago, I entered the gay websites again to conduct my own study. I pretended to be looking for a hookup with other men. 70% of those who I chatted with were willing to do unprotected sex with me. Some even won't do it if we are not going to use condoms. Most don't even ask if I am HIV positive or not. Is this the reality? Maybe but if people are willing to expose themselves to the risk, then definitely there will be a tremendous rise of HIV cases in the next few years.
The increase in the cases of HIV in the Philippines, can also be attributed to the rise in the number of people who are taking the HIV test. There are a lot of organizations from the public and private sector who are doing their own HIV testing all over the Philippines, but up to now, the trend is still uphill. Could this mean that there are more people who are infected out here who haven't been documented yet? Of course, and only the nationwide promotion of the HIV test can lure people to do it so we all will know how many are really infected here. I really believe that when it comes to this drive, of promoting HIV testing, the Philippines is doing great. However, stronger information dissemination is still needed so we can document how bad the epidemic here is.
So what are we going to do about it? My dear readers, you all have the responsibility to spread the news by:
1. Telling people to get tested.
2. Use condoms during sex.
3. Don't have sex while under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs.
4. Don't share needles or stop drug addiction.
