Email 417: ARS and HIV Test
Posted by Pozziepinoy on 8:39 AM
hi pozzie, i have a question. do you think na kung meron kang acute retroviral syndrome o primary HIV infection, kapag nag pa hiv test ka? ma de detect agad na HIV positive ka?
POZZIEPINOY’S RESPONSE
Hi.
Thank you for your email.
ARS won't necessarily mean that the HIV will be detected in the HIV Test. It only means that you MAY have been infected and still it could be anything infectious. The only way to detect HIV is by the time frame from the initial exposure. This pertains to the time period wherein the body has already produced enough antibodies to be detected by the HIV test. The window period for production of antibodies is up to 3 months and beyond that, the HIV test can accurately detect the presence of them, thus beyond 3 months post exposure makes a confirmation if the person is HIV positive or negative.
I hope I was able to answer your concerns. Feel free to email me again if you have other questions.
Stay healthy,
Pozziepinoy
